Are Chinese Herbs Safe?

Chinese herbal remedies are very safe when prescribed by a practitioner of Chinese medicine. On the other hand, they can be harmful or even dangerous when they are taken without any differential diagnosis. For example, if someone who has a common cold of wind/heat type takes a formula that has warming properties ( such as those used to treat wind/cold invasion) it can aggravate the symptoms and it could even be very dangerous for the person since it might produce high fever.

How are herbal remedies prescribed?

The most common way of dispensing herbs in the West is in a pill form since it is the most convenient way of taking them. They are also often prescribed in a liquid and granule form.

How often do I have to take them?

Herbal remedies are usually taken 2 or 3 times a day for 1 or a few weeks, depending on the nature of the condition being treated. They are always used for a specific period of time and they are discontinue once a therapeutic result is achieved.
